We begin our tour at Kanoni, where the ancient naval city of Corfu flourished in the 7th century BC, on the shores of lake Chalikiopoulos. We take a glance at the ancient ruins on the way and we stop to enjoy the panoramic views of the Mouse Island and the South East Coast of Corfu. We also visit a quaint little Greek Orthodox Monastery, one of the most famous in Greece, and a Corfu landmark.
Our tour then takes us to the palace and grounds of Mon Repo, which is where the late Prince Philip, husband to Queen Elisabeth II of England, was born. This palace was build by Lord Frederic Adams, the British Governor of the island in 1831. Today it operates as a museum which, amidst a small display of the original palace furniture, offers a wealth of retrieved antiquities, that allow us to journey back in time to the prosperous ancient city of Corfu. Surrounding the palace are gardens with rich foliage and imported tropical plants, today a National Park.
We conclude our tour with a visit to the Old Town of Corfu, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007. It is an absolute gem, an open air museum, where you get to appreciate the beautiful blend between the striking Italian and British architectural and cultural influences, alongside the greek character. You will enjoy all this, as we tour through the maze of the town’s very narrow streets.
